Winter Parking Headache Averted: Saanen Car Park Renovation Pushed to Spring 2025

The much-needed renovation of the Saanen underground car park, initially set to begin in mid-September 2024, has been delayed until the spring of 2025. This development follows ongoing concerns about the structure, which began leaking despite being just eleven years old.

In a statement provided by Philipp Becker, head of infrastructure for the municipality of Saanen, it was confirmed that the start date has been pushed back. While the original plan was to close the car park for renovation from mid-September to mid-December 2024, Becker noted that unforeseen issues with the construction company responsible for the project have caused the delay. He refrained from providing specific details, citing ongoing proceedings with the contractor.

Background on the Renovation
The Saanen underground car park, a key facility serving residents and visitors, was found to have significant leaks earlier this year. This prompted the municipality to schedule comprehensive repairs to ensure the long-term functionality of the structure. However, the delay in starting the renovation has raised concerns about the impact on local parking availability and traffic flow, especially as the winter season approaches.

Interim Parking Solutions
To address the parking shortfall during the renovation, a temporary car park with approximately 120 spaces is still slated to be built this autumn at the Davidsmatte car park on Spitalstrasse. (by the roundabout in downtown Saanen) The temporary facility is being built before the winter due to weather-related construction challenges, as the ground is expected to be too wet for such work in the spring. Although the car park will be constructed this autumn, it will not become operational until spring 2025, coinciding with the start of the renovation of the Saanen car park.

Impact on Local Community
Residents, tenants, and business owners near the car park were informed of the changes in early September. The municipality has been working to minimise disruptions, and further updates are expected as the project progresses. The delay in the renovation is expected to have a limited impact on local businesses in the short term. Still, the project remains essential for the long-term upkeep of the car park, which serves as a crucial hub for both locals and tourists.

Stay tuned for further updates as the municipality resolves issues with the contractor and finalises a revised schedule for the renovation work.
