Thrilling Matches at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad Keep Spectators on the Edge

The EFG Swiss Open Gstaad began with world-class tennis that left spectators enthralled. Top athletes, including Swiss participants like Leandro Riedi, showcased their skills in exciting duels. Despite a valiant effort, Riedi was ultimately defeated by Jan-Lennard Struff.

Tuesday, 16 July: 1st Round
After an exciting weekend and Monday of matches, the thrills continued on Tuesday. Last year's Swiss Open Gstaad winner, Pedro Cachin (ARG, ATP 110), faced off against the 2022 winner, Matteo Berrettini (ITA, ATP 82), in a gripping match that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Cachin put up a strong fight but ultimately lost 6:4, 7:6.

For Swiss tennis fans, Tuesday was challenging as Stan Wawrinka (ATP 105), Dominic Stricker, and Marc-Andrea Hüsler faced defeats. Hüsler resumed his interrupted match against Hamad Medjedovic (SRB, ATP 122) but lost 7:6, 6:7, 3:6. Stricker was bested by Botic van de Zandschulp (NED, ATP 87) in straight sets (3:6, 3:6). Wawrinka had a hard-fought match against Lukas Klein (SVK, ATP 118) but was edged out 6:7, 6:2, 5:7.

In doubles, the Tsitsipas brothers, Petros and Stefanos, electrified the crowd and secured a victory against Nicolas Barrientos (COL) and Luke Johnson (GBR) (6:3, 4:6, 12:14).

Wednesday, 17 July: Round of 16
On Wednesday, hopes were high for Swiss wildcard entrant Leandro Riedi as he faced Jan-Lennard Struff (ATP 37). Riedi fought hard, pushing both sets to tie-breaks (7:6, 7:6), but Struff ultimately emerged victorious, dashing Swiss hopes for a win in Gstaad this year.

The afternoon saw top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 12) battle Hamad Medjedovic in a thrilling match filled with long rallies and aces. Despite Medjedovic's spirited performance, especially after a medical timeout, Tsitsipas won 7:6, 6:3.

Veteran Fabio Fognini (ATP 80), the 2017 Gstaad champion, impressed in a three-set match against Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas (ATP 162), winning 3:6, 7:6, 7:5, and advancing to face Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals. Tomas Martin Etcheverry (ARG, ATP 32) also reached the quarter-finals, defeating Botic van de Zandschulp (6:2, 2:6, 6:3). However, he and Pedro Cachin lost in doubles to Santiago Gonzalez (MEX) and Skander Mansouri (TUN).

Thursday, 18 July: Round of 16
Thursday's matches revealed more quarter-finalists. Quentin Halys (FR, ATP 192) defeated Lukas Klein (6:3, 6:7, 6:4). Ugo Humbert faced qualifier Gustavo Heide, Matteo Berrettini took on Daniel Elahi Galan, and Felix Auger-Aliassime competed against Yannick Hanfmann. These matches concluded after the editorial deadline.

In doubles, the Tsitsipas brothers exited the tournament after a close match against Andre Begemann (GER) and Victor Cornea (ROU), who won 7:6, 3:6, 11:9.
