Swing through the seasons

Golf in the Alps is t y pica lly a summer activity, as lush greens yield to snow-covered landscapes in winter. However, in Saanen, the sport persists year-round, thanks to an indoor golf facility that combines technology with training. Indoor Golf Gstaad, situated in the heart of Saanen, provides local players with a space to hone their skills, whether they are beginners or experienced professionals aiming to keep their swing sharp during the off-season.

PGA Professional Christian Lüdemann, a golf instructor and player since 1986, has spearheaded this venture, providing structured coaching alongside a high-tech simulated golfing experience. While indoor golf facilities are common in urban areas, having one in the middle of a ski resort region is a game-changer for local players who might otherwise see their skills rust over the long winter months.

Taking a closer look at the facility
On a recent rainy Saturday, my colleague Liv, a golf enthusiast, tested the facility. Lüdemann introduced us to the training programs, explaining how TrackMan technology captures every swing in detail, allowing players to analyse their form and make corrections. High-resolution video feedback ensures that even the subtlest mistakes can be identified and adjusted.

Watching Liv in action confirmed just how technical the sport is – every slight movement matters.

Lüdemann’s keen eye picked up nuances in her swing that would have been nearly impossible to spot without the aid of the video analysis. It was fascinating to see how small adjustments translated into better shots almost immediately.

More than just a training ground, the 4K projector and Dolby Surround sound system make for an immersive experience. Golfers can play virtually on some of the world’s most famous courses, from Pebble Beach to St. Andrews, with sound effects bringing the atmosphere to life. Standing in the middle of the simulation, hearing the wind whistle through the trees, I could almost believe we were really there.

From niche to notable
The Swiss Indoor Tournament scene has grown significantly in recent years. Lüdemann himself remembers when he signed up a few years ago and was the only registered participant. Now, participation numbers tell a different story, illustrating the rising popularity of indoor golf as both a training tool and a competitive sport in its own right.

It’s easy to see why. The ability to play and train in a controlled environment, with precise feedback and conditions that mimic real-world courses, provides a distinct advantage. I could see how a dedicated golfer would relish the opportunity to keep their skills sharp during the long Alpine winter.

Accessibility and availability
The facility offers lessons and training sessions by appointment, with pricing structured for both individual and group coaching.

Lüdemann notes that while winter training is the primary draw, the unpredictable mountain weather makes this facility equally useful in summer. “If conditions turn bad, we can quickly move a training session indoors rather than cancel it altogether.”

While I may not be rushing to pick up a golf club, I left with a new appreciation for the precision and dedication the sport demands. And who knows – perhaps next time, I’ll be stepping up to the tee.
