Sailing through winds of success and melody
21.01.2025 Sports & LeisureA rising star in sailing
2024 has been a milestone year for Anja von Allmen, a key racing member of the Gstaad Yacht Club (GYC). Making history, Anja participated as a trimmer in the inaugural America’s Women’s Cup with Alinghi Red Bull Racing. Though her team faced a dramatic setback in the semifinal qualifiers, their performance showcased exceptional talent and determination.
Undeterred, Anja ventured to Australia for intensive training and competition in ILCA 6 events. Her efforts culminated in December with a third-place finish at the prestigious Sail Melbourne Regatta 2024. Reflecting on her achievement, Anja remarked, “It’s a solid regatta where I avoided big mistakes. This was a valuable comparison with a strong fleet, helping me identify areas to improve this winter.”
Her momentum carried into 2025 with a stellar performance in Brisbane at another ILCA 6 regatta, where she secured third place amidst challenging conditions and a formidable 90-strong fleet. Hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron – a reciprocal club of the GYC – this event marked a strong start to her season.
Nurturing future talent
Under the guidance of Peter Erzberger, the GYC Racing Team continues to grow, fostering emerging talent.
One such rising star is Lou Eisenhut, introduced at the GYC’s recent Annual General Meeting. Lou, already a formidable competitor in the Optimist class, has her sights set on the European and World Championships in Palamós and Portimão. With GYC’s support, Lou is poised to make waves in the sailing world.
Peter Erzberger, known for his strategic leadership, remains committed to expanding the team’s roster. The GYC Racing Team, already a powerhouse, is well-positioned for an exciting season ahead.
Harmonizing sailing and music
Beyond the seas, the GYC played a pivotal role in the 19th Gstaad New Year Music Festival 2024/2025. As both the opening and closing venue, the club hosted enchanting evenings blending fine dining and captivating music. A standout performance was Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” reimagined by violinist Linus Roth, performing on a 1703 Stradivarius, and guitarist Petrit Çeku. Adding a unique touch, renowned journalist Nelson Monfort delivered the accompanying sonnets, synchronising poetry with music.
With the festival’s 20th anniversary on the horizon, anticipation builds for an extraordinary program crafted by director Caroline Murat. If this season’s success is any indication, the next chapter will be nothing short of spectacular.
From fostering sailing excellence to enriching cultural landscapes, the GYC remains a beacon of innovation and tradition, uniting diverse passions under one vibrant community. Happy New Year 2025.
