31.12.2024 MagazineIn November, a new chapter began in our lives with the arrival of George – the gorgeous Griffon. He’s a 5-yearold rescue from northern Spain, and to say his life up until now has been rough would be an understatement. Our old dog, Kaxi, quite the character, passed away in April. We’d thought about taking a break from dog ownership, giving ourselves more freedom – and honestly, Kaxi left some pretty big pawprints to fill. But sometimes, life has other plans. George found his way to us, and here we are, 8 weeks in, learning the ropes of being adoptive doggie parents.
Saanenland has always been a wonderfully dog-friendly place. I’m fortunate to work in an office where dogs aren’t just allowed – they’re embraced as part of the “staff.” It’s fantastic to see how much an office’s spirit lifts with the presence of a four-legged colleague. I’ve also discovered that quite a few two-legged colleagues keep treats stashed away in their bottom drawers. Once George settles in, he’ll be coming to the office, too, and I’m sure he’ll fit right in with the gang.
Adopting a 5-year old rescue dog comes with its own set of surprises. Unlike a puppy, he’s already fully grown and capable of understanding commands. But George has had his share of “groundhog moments,” where he seems momentarily lost, unsure of where he is or who’s around him. It’s a strange but humbling experience to see him reboot like this. These moments remind me to have patience – not just with George, but with everything. I’m learning to slow down, simplify my approach with him, and by extension, with life itself. It’s a perspective shift I didn’t see coming, but one I’m grateful for.
As we turn the page on 2024 and look toward 2025, I’d like to wish you all a Happy New Year. May it be a year full of remarkable moments – big and small. Take time to enjoy one of the many concerts this January, or simply head out for a long walk. Feel the sun on your face and the crunch of snow underfoot. And who knows? You just might spot George and me out there doing the same.
Happy New Year 2025.
