Les Lalanne exhibition brings artistic magic to Gstaad
12.07.2024 Arts & CultureStudio Naegeli, under the passionate curation of Anna Högl, has once again brought something extraordinary to Gstaad. Galerie Mitterrand from Paris, in collaboration with Studio Naegeli, is presenting “Les Lalanne,” an exhibition dedicated to the enchanting works of the artist couple Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne. This exhibition showcases several significant pieces from Lalanne’s renowned bestiary, including “Paire de Singes Alternatifs” (2013), “Grande Grue lumineuse” (2008), “Miroir Hortensia” (2009), and an extraordinary “Choupatte” from 1967.
The collaboration this summer between Studio Naegeli and Galerie Mitterrand’s is a natural progression resulting from an inspiring exchange between Edward Mitterrand and Anna Högl. Edward and his father, Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand, were involved in every aspect of the show, making this common project seem seamless and heartfelt. Christian Högl appears to be very satisfied with the outcome, too.
The exhibition will surely strike a chord with both the local community and visitors. Legendary works of Les Lalanne, inspired by nature and blending whimsical elements with meticulous craftsmanship, harmonise beautifully with Gstaad’s natural environment and aesthetic. The luminous crane sculpture, “Grande Grue lumineuse”, and the hydrangea-adorned “Miroir Hortensia” stand out, perfectly complementing the serene mountain life.
Adding to the allure, the exhibition also features an early work by Picasso – a portrait of Julio Gozanlez from 1901, which fits well within the intimate and personal atmosphere cultivated at the gallery. Visitors can also view an original drawing by François-Xavier Lalanne of the birdshaped rocking chair on display, offering a unique glimpse into his creative process.
I imagine that the response to the exhibition will be overwhelmingly positive, bringing new visitors to the gallery and highlighting the dedication to blending global and local art influences. This dedication is also evident in the ongoing projects with young and established artists that Anna curates in Bern, where artists are given a platform to experiment and showcase their work without commercial pressures.
Anna and Christian’s approach to fostering creativity is distinctive and personal. They create an environment where artists feel free to express themselves, hosting both formal exhibitions and spontaneous events, such as last year’s open-air cinema in their garden or classic car exhibition in collaboration with Gstaad Yacht Club and this summer’s “Naegeli Garage” pop-up featuring works of Juliette Somnolet. I feel that their goal is to make art accessible and engaging for everyone.
In Gstaad, art plays a crucial role in providing an opportunity to disconnect from structured daily life and see the world from a different perspective. Through exhibitions like “Les Lalanne,” Studio Naegeli and Galerie Mitterrand offer people a chance to experience something unique and meaningful, enriching the cultural fabric of the town.
