Hans Hartung: A masterpiece

06.09.2024 Advertising, Events, Fashion, Business, Arts & Culture

Must-sees for September 2024: Paris Fashion Week, Monaco Yacht Show, 28th International Exhibition of Contemporary Artists in Saint Tropez and an exciting new entry, Geneva’s Piguet Auction House to discover a major work by Hans Hartung!

Admired by many at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris for the Hans Hartung, la fabrique du geste retrospective in 2020, this spectacular oil painting will go under the hammer this month at Piguet in Geneva.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, capable of discreetly enhancing the chicest design interiors, this painting ranks highly in the artist’s catalogue of works. As a German immigrant in France, Hans Hartung was conscripted and wounded during the Second World War and could no longer paint. The Armistice was a turning point for the artist, who regained his creative freedom. In 1947, at a highly publicised exhibition at the Lydia Conti gallery in Paris, he was described as a “pioneer of gestural abstraction or lyrical abstraction”. With such recognition, Hans Hartung became a leader in the Abstract Art movement, the most important artistic movement of the twentieth century.

The work presented here was executed in 1948 and comes from the Lydia Conti gallery, which represented the artist from 1946 and played an active part in his international success. Works dating from the immediate post-war period are rare and the most important historically. Hugely sought-after by collectors, they fetch the highest prices on the international market.

Piguet’s September catalogue will also feature grands crus classés, important timepieces, fine jewellery, luxury handbags by Hermès, Fendi and Chanel, design furniture and many other surprises!
