GYC Racing and Sailing Teams make waves in 2024

  31.12.2024 Sports & Leisure

The GYC Racing and Sailing Teams have had an extraordinary finish to 2024, with standout performances from members in both national and international competitions. The club has launched a dedicated donation campaign to support these talented athletes and continue growing the GYC’s influence in the sailing world. Contributions will help sustain the GYC Racing Team project and further elevate the GYC’s position on the global sailing stage.

Family Triumph at the Scandinavian Gold Cup
A highlight of the year was GYC member Flavio Marazzi’s stunning victory at the 2024 Scandinavian Gold Cup, one of the world’s oldest sailing regattas for 5.5-meter yachts. Competing alongside his teenage daughters, Julie and Eline Marazzi, on the yacht ALI BABA, the trio captured the prestigious trophy in an unforgettable showdown.

The regatta, held annually since 1919 (with interruptions only during wartime), is a nation-based competition in which each country can send only one boat. This year’s event in August culminated in a high-stakes, all-or-nothing final race between the three remaining contenders: ARTEMIS, JOHN B, and ALI BABA. After a gruelling series of six races, each boat had two wins, leading to a nail-biting showdown.

Light winds of just two to six knots heightened the tension on the course. Initially trailing the leaders, ALI BABA’s strategic choice to head to the right on the final upwind leg proved decisive. A favourable wind shift significantly boosted the Marazzi family, transforming a 12-length deficit into a commanding lead. Their composure and tactical brilliance secured them the win.

The victory was especially poignant for Julie and Eline, aged 16 and 14, as it marked their first-ever race win in a 5.5-meter regatta – and a Gold Cup title to boot. The Marazzi legacy spans three generations, with Flavio’s father also winning the Gold Cup 20 years ago.

Elena Lengwiler’s Silver Medal Success
Meanwhile, GYC’s kitesurfing sensation Elena Lengwiler wrapped up 2024 in spectacular fashion, claiming silver at the September KiteFoil World Series in Sardinia, Italy. This result followed another second-place finish earlier at the KiteFoil World Series in Austria, securing her status as Vice World Champion for the 2024 season.

“We had a wonderful week in sunny Sardinia with mainly offshore Mistral winds,” Lengwiler said. “The conditions were tricky, so I’m delighted with my result. Finishing the 2024 season on the podium feels fantastic, and I’m looking forward to a well-deserved break before the next Olympic cycle leading up to Los Angeles 2028.”

Her achievements in Sardinia and Austria cemented her place as one of the world’s top kitesurfers, showcasing her skill, consistency, and determination.
