Familiar and new faces at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad

12.07.2024 Sports & Leisure, Swiss Open Gstaad - ATP Tennis, Sports & Leisure

This year’s EFG Swiss Open Gstaad promises an exciting tennis tournament featuring seven top 20 players, including Swiss stars Dominic Stricker and Stan Wawrinka. The tournament kicks off on 13 July with the qualifying rounds and concludes on 21 July with the finals in singles and doubles.

Strong main field
The competition will be fierce, with top-ranked players like Alex de Minaur from Australia and Hubert Hurkacz from Poland among the favourites. Other notable competitors include Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul. Returning players such as Felix Auger-Aliassime, Yannick Hanfmann, and Fabio Fognini, who are familiar with the Saanenland tournament, could leverage their past experiences. Former Gstaad champions Matteo Berrettini and Albert Ramos-Vinolas are also strong contenders.

New format for doubles
The ATP’s new rules for doubles matches will debut at this year’s tournament. Aiming to increase the appeal of doubles, the format now includes a reduced tableau of twelve teams and shorter intervals between points and sides. Spectators can move freely in the stands during matches, a departure from the traditional requirement of silence.

Fit for the Olympics
The Gstaad tournament serves as the final test for players heading to the Olympics in Paris, including Stan Wawrinka. Unlike the past seven Summer Olympics played on hard courts, the 1992 Barcelona Games were the last to feature clay courts.

Tickets are in demand
Ticket sales are strong, and there is a high demand for seats on Friday and Saturday. To accommodate the crowd, the organisers have added nearly 300 seats to the grandstand. Shady seating options will also be available in the E-stand.

Activities around the tournament
The EFG Swiss Open Gstaad offers plenty of off-court activities. Family Day on Tuesday features a tennis course and various activities for children, alongside exciting matches. The final Sunday includes an air show, food trucks, and bars in the tournament village. The popular Silent Party returns on Saturday night, and the Bernese singer-songwriter Nils Burri will perform in the Village on Friday and Saturday evenings, ensuring entertainment continues after the matches.

The EFG Swiss Open Gstaad is set to deliver a thrilling week of tennis and community activities, making it a highlight of the summer for both tennis fans and locals alike.
