Petra Schläppi Elected First Female President of Saanen Municipality
27.10.2024 NewsUpdate, Municipal - Politics, Local News, NewsUpdateThe votes in Saanen have been counted, and as confirmed in a press release from the Saanen municipal office on Sunday, Petra Schläppi (SVP) has secured the presidency with a clear majority, making history as the first female president of Saanen. Schläppi received 980 votes, followed by David Schmid (FDP) with 704 votes and Martin Göppert (independent) with 139 votes.
Hans Schär (FDP) has been elected as President of the Municipal Assembly, prevailing with 1,124 votes over Emanuel Raaflaub-Kohli (SVP), who received 686 votes. A few weeks prior, Christian Gafner (FDP) was confirmed as Vice President of the Municipal Assembly in an uncontested election.
In the new nine-member Municipal Council for the 2025–2029 term, the FDP has gained a seat from the SVP, adjusting the composition as follows: SVP holds five seats, FDP three seats, and GLP one seat.
The new executive council members are:
- Petra Schläppi-Hauswirth (SVP), President
- Nathanael Perreten (SVP, incumbent): 1,420 votes
- David Daniel Schmid (FDP, incumbent): 1,230 votes
- Klaus Romang (SVP, incumbent): 1,135 votes
- Martin Hefti (SVP, incumbent): 1,133 votes
- Patricia Alexandra Matti (SVP, incumbent): 1,026 votes
- Philippe Marmet (GLP, new): 758 votes
- Elio von Grünigen (FDP, new): 646 votes
- Sigbert Joachim Feller (FDP, new): 623 votes
In total, 1,942 citizens participated in the election, with a turnout of 49.92%. The elected candidates will receive an official election notice from the municipal administration early this week, which includes a five-day period should any wish to decline their role.
Outgoing president Toni von Grünigen expressed his enthusiasm over the election of a woman to lead Saanen and welcomed the continuity brought by the re-election of nearly all existing members. “In times of rapid change, it’s crucial to continue what has been started and to pursue shared objectives. I wish the incoming team much joy and success,” he stated in the press release. He also expressed regret that Thomas Frei was not re-elected, acknowledging Frei’s dedicated commitment to the municipality and extending his thanks.
The newly elected council's responsibilities will be distributed in early January 2025.
