A triumvirate of triumphs
21.06.2024 Sports & LeisureHerzog-Carl-Pokal: GYC Member Triumphs at Lake Constance
At the Württemberg Yacht Club’s Cup Regatta on Lake Constance, held on May 11–12 for the Dynamic 35, 45 sqm National Cruiser, and 30 sqm Schärenkreuzer classes, GYC member Peter Theile achieved a start-tofinish victory with his “MARIPOSA” in the 30 sqm Schärenkreuzer class on Saturday, despite light winds.
In the afternoon, Lake Constance saw wind forces between 0.5 and 1.5 Bft, with shifting winds from SW to NW. The “MARIPOSA” finished fourth in the second race. Sunday morning’s race also faced challenging wind conditions, but strong maneuvers helped the “MARIPOSA” secure another first-place finish, clinching overall victory in the class.
The winning team included Harald and Jannis Böhler from the Radolfzell Yacht Club and Alex Ballweg from the Überlingen Yacht Club. During the prize-giving, the WYC president noted this was Peter Theile’s second consecutive win and his seventh overall victory, raising the possibility that he might secure the Duke Carl’s Cup permanently with another win next year.
Second Place at Lake Constance for Sailors from the Saanenland
The newly founded GYC Sailing Team sailed their first regatta, the Bodenseewoche in the 6mR class, on the magnificent world champion boat COURAGE in Konstanz. Trainer and helmsman Flavio Marazzi, a fourtime Olympic sailor, is delighted and proud of this young team. Formed this spring, the team secured second place at this year’s Bodensee week, finishing behind Reinhard Suhner. The GYC crew – club members Sandro Bolton, sisters Sophie and Louise Lienhart, and Patrizia Matti – are very grateful to Suhner for providing this beautiful boat.
The International Bodensee Week, a regatta with a historic profile dating back to 1909, took place in Konstanz from Friday, May 24 to Sunday, May 26, 2024. In addition to the exciting competitions on the water, there were lively activities and top-notch entertainment at the harbour area in Konstanz.
Olympic Qualifications
Elena Lengwiler of the GYC Racing Team secured her spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics with an impressive sixth-place finish at the World Championships in Hyères. The Olympic sailing events will take place in Marseille's waters.
This achievement marks the sixth time in 20 years that GYC members have represented the club at the Olympics. Since 2004, GYC athletes have competed in up to three disciplines at the Olympic sailing competitions.
At the Kite World Championships in Hyères, Lengwiler realised her Olympic dream. Switzerland had already secured her a quota spot two weeks earlier at the Last-Chance Regatta, the Semaine Olympique, also in Hyères. The former ice hockey player needed only the World Championship result to meet the Swiss Olympic qualification criteria and fulfil her dream of competing in the Olympic Games.
