A new base station and lift at Horneggli

Bergbahnen Destination Gstaad AG is investing in the future to create unforgettable experiences for its guests. Rather than viewing today’s rapid changes as a challenge, the company sees them as an opportunity to innovate. With this mindset, they are upgrading offerings and infrastructure across various areas – all with a singular goal: to provide visitors with a truly memorable experience.

The “Generation Project Gstaad+”
A significant construction project is set to transform the Schönried-Saanenmöser ski area. At its core is a new 10-seater gondola that will run from Schönried, over Horneggli, and up to Hornberg. This will be complemented by a new six-seater chairlift from Saanenwald to Horeflue, as well as another connection between Gfell and Horeflue. These cutting-edge lifts are being developed by Leitner/Bartholet, featuring a gondola designed in collaboration with the renowned Italian design studio Pininfarina. “The gondola boasts standout features such as a wider entrance and panoramic glass panels that extend up to the ceiling, offering an all-encompassing view and an exceptional riding experience,” explains Matthias In-Albon, CEO of Bergbahnen Destination Gstaad AG (BDG).

In addition to the new lifts, BDG is also expanding the efficiency of the existing snowmaking systems, particularly the water resource. A new water reservoir on Hornberg with a capacity of 178,000 cubic meters will allow full snow coverage for the eastern sector at the start of the season – without requiring additional pumping capacity. Furthermore, 20,000 to 30,000 cubic meters of rainwater collected from buildings on Hornberg will be stored in a retention basin. “These measures are part of our response to climate change. Our aim is to guarantee exceptional skiing conditions and ensure even greater snow reliability,” says In-Albon.

As part of the “Generation Project Gstaad+”, BDG is also redesigning the base station. The new facility will include a multi-story underground garage with around 500 parking spaces, staff housing, office space for the Snowsports Saanenland ski school, and a cafe-bistro.

“It’s a costly project, but it’s essential. We need to invest in the future to offer our guests everything they need for a perfect ski day,” says Matthias In-Albon.

With state-of-the-art infrastructure and a clear focus on sustainability, Bergbahnen Destination Gstaad AG is positioning itself to meet the demands of future generations of skiers and mountain enthusiasts.

The development plan is currently under public consultation. Once approved, it will be submitted to the Federal Office of Transport (FOT), and construction is expected to begin in early April 2026.
